Too many Hector’s dolphins are being killed by the fishing industry. There may be many more deaths that aren’t reported.
Both central and regional governments can and must to more to protect Māui and Hector’s dolphins.
Central Government must protect Māui and Hector’s throughout their range - out to 100m deep or 20nm.
Regional Councils must support that protection from fishing and ensure the dolphins are safe from other threats too. This involves strong Regional Coastal Plans to protect regional biodiversity from fishing related effects. This is especially important in Canterbury coastal waters where a high concentration of Hector’s are being killed.
